However, several flagship projects have faced significant setbacks, including the troubled 1.2 billion euro Larnaca port and marina redevelopment, which saw its original concession terminated in 2024 after years of delays and financing problems. The Road Network Modernization Program The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works has prioritized road infrastructure development, allocating 439.3 million euros through September 2026 for a comprehensive highway and road network upgrade. The program includes ten major projects designed to reduce travel times, improve safety, and decrease urban congestion. Originally built as a private villa, the structure evolved into a public recreation center that served Kourion's citizens for over two centuries. Historical Background The House of Eustolios rose from the ruins of catastrophe. In 365 AD, a massive earthquake devastated the eastern Mediterranean, striking Kourion with particular force. The ancient city, which had thrived as one of Cyprus's major kingdoms since the 13th century BC, lay in rubble. Buildings collapsed, infrastructure crumbled, and the population struggled to survive among the wreckage. Twenty-five years after the disaster, Kourion remained in a dismal state. Into this scene returned Eustolios, a wealthy Christian citizen who had been away from his hometown. Shocked by the continued suffering of his fellow citizens, he made a remarkable decision. The Madari Circular Trail starts just outside the village of Kyperounta in the eastern Troodos Mountains and follows a well signed 13 kilometer route with approximately 650 meters of elevation gain through some of the most beautiful scenery the island has to offer. The trail is considered difficult based on the routes available in Cyprus, and the peak of the mountain reaches 1,600 meters. This superb circular trail winds around Madari mountain peak in the Pitsilia area of the Troodos mountain range. The circular hike takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete. The route combines ridge walking with spectacular panoramic views, dense forest passages through the Adelfoi Forest, and unique geological formations. The trail ranks among the most beautiful hiking routes in Cyprus for its combination of vertical exposure, varied vegetation, and 360-degree vistas that span from the Mesaoria Plain to the Mediterranean coast.
